Creatures of the Night
by Stephen J. Brooks
"Creatures of the Night" is a delightful tale of the world of nocturnal creatures. Children are fascinated, and sometimes intimidated, by this world that exists in the darkness. This beautifully illustrated rhyming tale allows them to associate playful, fun characters with the sounds and noises they hear. This story is sure to help each child drift off to a peaceful sleep with charming images of singing toads, dancing fireflies and other creatures that come out to play when the sun goes down.

Sleep Peacefully My Princess
by Stephen J. Brooks
In an ever-changing world, children need appropriate information, to feel safe and protected, and know they are loved. Balancing how much to tell them, how to protect them, and ensuring they feel safe can be a challenge to even the most experienced of parents.
In Sleep Peacefully, My Princess, Steve Brooks writes the delightfully illustrated poem of a father who stays awake every night, keeping a steady vigil, to ward off all his child's perceived dangers and chase all the monsters and bogeymen from her world. |

Nobody Left Behind : One Child's Story About Testing
by Deanna Enos
Since standardized testing became a priority for schools, nine-year-old Jeffery Taylor’s academic life has become pure torture. He suffers from a condition called test anxiety: when he takes a test, his stomach aches, his eyes hurt, he feels like his head is going to blow up, and, at times, he visibly trembles.
Jeff’s active imagination hasn’t helped his success at school either—especially if he’s drawing when he’s supposed to be working on other subjects. But schoolwork is not his only problem. His classmate, Matt Huggins, is a real pest, and Jeff and his best friend, Terry, are growing apart. But Jeff is delighted when he meets a new friend who helps him to face his academic challenges.
Testing is a tremendous issue in schools today. It can have a lasting effect on funding as schools balance the need to meet accountability standards with the desire to provide learning to students. But most importantly, it can result in test anxiety which has a lasting effect on children.
In Nobody Left Behind, author Deanna Enos uses storytelling as an example of how to begin a dialogue between children, teachers, and parents concerning this important subject. |

Henry Potty and the Pet Rock: An Unauthorized Harry Potter Parody
by Valerie Estelle Frankel
Catastrophe strikes Chickenfeet Academy, and it’s not just the cafeteria food. Lord Revolting, murderous goldfish-flusher, needs Really Wimpy’s pet rock to conquer the world! While battling him with squirt guns and cheesy how-to guides, Henry Potty aces Hobology, preps for America’s Funniest Fairygodchildren, and tries to avoid laundering Professor Snort’s dreaded hankies, or worse, watching A History of Cabbages in Polish. All the while, the least likely character watches, coveting the pet rock for her own sneaky agenda. What part does Socks the parrot, wisecracking pet of Headmaster Bumbling Bore, play in all this? Will Revolting dare the ultimate villainy and spoil the book? Will this novel waste your entire morning? There’s only one way to know…
Unapproved, unendorsed, unofficial, and unstoppable: an award-winning parody for all the Harry Potter kids out there.

Shadow of Shaniko (Ghostowner series #3)
by Calamity Jan
Set in a ghost town in central Oregon, a runaway Native American boy is leaving messages on the chalkboard in the old Shaniko schoolhouse. Gabe Stackpole of the Warm Springs Reservation finds the 'whipping stick' above his door and fears he is being pursued by the Whipman who will hear the spirit of the stick calling to him. Gabe's only crime was that he had taken the beloved hound he had been forced to give up and was attempting to hide him. While the disciplinary practice of the Whipman was common on many reservations before 1930, it is seldom employed today. A newspaper clip of a Whipman incident occurring at Warm Springs triggered the idea for this book. |

The Chronicles of Pleasant Grove
by A.M. Johnston-Brown
This is an enchanting book of three chronicles taking place at the turn of the 20th Century on the humble farm of "Pleasant Grove." Annie, the red-haired Golden Retriever, and her best friend, Benny the Mouse, attempt to maintain peace and harmony on their beloved farm with the help of their fellow critter friends. There is danger, romance, jealousy, betrayal, scandal and redemption to be found in each fascinating tale, as well as an occasional critter-napping or two.
Written in verse, this book has an almost "Seussish" style and challenges the young reader with more advanced vocabulary than they may be accustomed to. Accordingly, the author has designed an accompanying glossary to aid in the young reader’s understanding of the text. This book is an excellent tool for educational purposes, going beyond the customary objective of mere reading entertainment. It is a must for any child 9 to 13 years because it inspires old-fashioned ideals while relating to adolescents on a more current and familiar level. |
